My first Crochet Doily

I got inspired to make doilies when I picked up a few in Croatia on my recent vacation. I loved how several elderly women where sitting outside just crocheting away and making these fantastic looking items.

This picture was taken before blocking (pinning the doily on a towel and spraying it with starch and then letting it dry).
This is what the doily looked like after blocking.

I definitely will make more and try out different colors as well.

  1. When I visited Croatia in 2008 I bought a crochet doily. I would really like to learn to crochet. I'm not sure where to begin. Is the doily made with cotton thread? What size of crochet hook is used to make the doily in your post?

  2. Hey, thank you for your post :) This doily was made with a size 3 cotton thread and I used a 2mm crochet hook. I have made this doily in different sizes just by using different size hooks and a number 10 thread. If you want to learn how to crochet, try youtube.com for instructional videos. That way you can replay and stop the video anytime.( They have videos for any stich and how to get started) There are also a lot of free patterns online available to print for any project. Start with an easy project, like a pot holder so you can practice different stiches. Let me know how you like it. Have a great day and thank you for your interest.
